Essential Tools for Spider Cookie Success

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Wire rack for cooling
  • Small piping bag or zip-top bag for chocolate legs

Mastering the Spider Cookie Technique

spider cookies

  1. Prepare the dough: Melt butter, mix with sugars, egg, and vanilla. Fold in sifted dry ingredients.
  2. Shape & bake: Roll into balls, press slightly, and bake at 170°C (340°F) for 12-15 minutes.
  3. Add spider bodies: Gently press Maltesers on top while cookies are warm.
  4. Decorate: Pipe chocolate legs and add white icing eyes.

Pro Tip: Let the cookies cool a little before decorating to prevent the chocolate from running.

Tips & Troubleshooting for Spider Cookies

  • Dough too sticky? Chill it in the fridge for 10 minutes before rolling.
  • Maltesers falling off? Press them into the cookies right out of the oven.
  • Chocolate too runny? Let it cool slightly before piping.

Creative Variations & Serving Ideas

  • Use peanut butter cups instead of Maltesers for chunky spiders.
  • Swap white icing for candy eyeballs for extra fun.
  • Add orange or purple sprinkles around the spiders for a festive Halloween look.

FAQ

Can I make spider cookies ahead of time?

Yes, store them in an airtight container for up to a week. Decorate right before serving for best presentation.

Can I freeze spider cookies?

The dough can be frozen for up to 2 months. Bake fresh, then decorate after cooling.

What can I use instead of Maltesers?

Chocolate truffles, Whoppers, or peanut butter cups work well too.
