These banana oatmeal protein muffins are hands-down some of the best healthy banana muffins I've ever made. They're soft, fluffy, lightly sweet, and packed with banana flavor, with just the right nutty texture from oats and optional walnuts.

banana oatmeal protein muffins this sugar

Even better? Each muffin contains ~10 grams of protein, is low fat, and is gluten-free, dairy-free, and easily made vegan. If you leave out the walnuts, each muffin is only about 130 calories, making two or three perfect as a post-workout snack or pre-workout breakfast.

If you love banana bread but want something lighter, higher-protein, and macro-friendly, these banana oatmeal protein muffins will quickly become a staple.

Why You'll Love These Banana Oatmeal Protein Muffins

  • High-protein (≈10g per muffin)
  • Low fat and naturally sweetened
  • Gluten-free & dairy-free
  • Easily made vegan
  • Meal-prep friendly (freezer-safe)
  • Perfect for breakfast, snacks, or workouts

The Health Benefits of Walnuts

Did you know? Walnuts are significantly higher in omega-3 fats than any other nut, primarily in the form of α-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) that supports:

  • Cellular and nerve function
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Blood sugar balance
  • Skin health and aging prevention

ALA cannot be synthesized by the body, meaning it must come from food - and walnuts are one of the best natural sources. So next time someone tells you all PUFAs are "bad," remember that many are literally essential for life.

  • Reduced-calorie brown sugar sweetener
Substitute with coconut sugar, regular brown sugar, monk fruit, erythritol, or granulated sugar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these muffins vegan?

Yes. Replace egg whites with a flax egg or vegan egg replacer and ensure your protein powder is plant-based.

Can I use a different protein powder?

You can, but results may vary. Some proteins absorb more liquid and can make muffins dry or dense.

Are these muffins gluten-free?

Yes, when made with oat flour or a certified gluten-free flour.

Can I reduce the carbs?

You can replace up to half a cup of oat flour with one-quarter cup coconut flour, but the muffins will be less fluffy.

Why are my muffins dense?

Overmixing, too much banana, or using a very absorbent protein powder can cause dense muffins.
